Cosmo-Political Identity NoMad of Art

A Retrospective Peep-Show by Jan- Åke Pettersson

The following retrospective look at Kjartan Slettemark's unconventional life and creation covers a period of nearly 20 years. During this time, he and his art has existed under what is best characterised by William Burrough's statement, "Nothing is true, everything is permitted".

As often as the techniques have changed, his identity has metamorphosed. We can trace his development in his signatures, from the early paintings' "K.Slettemark", to when he finally arrives at the eccense of his own concept - "kjARTan", with art in the middle - when he himself is the artwork.

In his role as a living artwork he has continiously appeared in new guises - as an American president, as a poodle in his own dog's-life or as Dr Video to his most recent identity Mr Digitalisman. For lack of any specific geographical identity, Kjartan has become a Swedish-Norwegian borderline case, but is far from being one in a psychiatric sense, although he was classified as such in the late 60's, by virtue of not conforming in dress or in his attitude to art. He had to work hard to disclaim this accusation, but eventually succeeded as the title indicates. If anyone is worthy of the title Shaman, Kjartan certainly is.

The painter and his eviroment (1959-64)

Art schools were to prove a predominantly negative experience for Kjartan, and not until 1963, when he made a decisive brake with their model methods, can we discern anything of that which characterises his oeuvre. The frame was getting too cramped in Oslo, and the general moralism was too severe.

Therefore, when the Swedish artist Inga Bagge turned up one autumn evening in 1959 at the Indremisjon Hotel where Kjartan worked, and started to talk of art sa an expression of personal and sensual freedom, he needed only 5 minutes to think before accepting her invitation to go back with her to Sweden.

The following day he left Oslo, and since then he lived in Sweden. Inga had been a student of "1947 year's man" Lennart Rodhe, but free and pedagogical use of "abstract movements" was in sharp contrast to the originator's more rigid system.

Kjartan soon realised this when he started at the Swedish Royal Academy of Art and chosed Rodhe as his teacher in 1962. It was a leap out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Plastic art in semantic chaos (1965-67)

For Kjartan, plastic represented the abolition of norms concerning what a work of art should look like. It moved the boundaries of creativity to realms where nothing was true and everything was permitted. In the winter of 1964-65, he began his excursion to rubbish-dumps to look for objects, things that appealed to him sensually - "shapes that saw me". Some of these were incorporated in his plastic assamblage, "No.1, 1965", in which he has pacaked a green-painted sheet and some bits of plastic behind a large cross made of white plasticised canvas strips.

The first picture he made with a political content is known in Norway as the Vietnam Picture. He made it in response to his emotions on seeing a photo in a newspaper of a child burnt by napalm. It was a white plastic painting, between red parted lips the letters VIETNAM were written over a burnt plastic doll and a "blood-splattered" American flag.

In the summer of 1965, the Vietnam picture shook Norway's cultural life more than any artwork before or after. From the perspective of art history it may be one of the decade's most importante pictures in Norway.

Body art happenings & actions (1967-68)

Kjartan liked dressing in daring, expressive clothes, and in 1964 he had aquired a pink suit that had evoked a strong response, not least within himself. "I looked, and felt, like a shop dummy - and I liked it. It was good for my identity. " Like much of Kjartans art, the clothes were not made to be exhibited in galleries but to be used in life among people. The following year he said his reverberating Yes to imagination by having three coloured capped teeth put into his mouth, 2 green and 1 red. These he kept for 10 years. In Oslo he staged Norway's first happening, by sitting unannounced on a black pelt wearing a pink-painted jeans outfit, and laying a tarot or patience with 5000 portraits of Chairman Mao.

At Kjartan's first separate exhibition in Sweden he issued invitations with soil and grass seeds that he distributed naked in the street. Later he built a bed and moved into the gallery. The premises were dark and visitors were given electric torches to light their way around the many objects in this anarchistic eviroment. A female assistant in nurse's garb handed out pills to high and low. He used day-trips offerd by LSD in the 60's, and by liberating this side he found the road to his mind's "launching-ramps".

Persecution (1968-70)

Earlier the same year he had been evicted from his studio flat. The bailiffs destroyed 6 works of art. The police were called in but did not intervene. The suit for damages was lost in the Supreme Court, after the defence counsel made the decisive plea: "Your Honor, what Mr. Slettemark does can not be called art."

One day, on way to the social security office, he took over a burnt-out hot-dog stand and started handing out "Soot-sausage with shrapnel mustard and plastic ketchup". He was reported by the owner for braking-and-entry and was arrested by a policeman with a dog. The event formed the starting point for a multi-media exhibition, "600 White-and-Black Police Hallucinations in Colour".

The police, who had increasingly interfered with his art and life in several other situations when he had refused to follow rules or paragraphs, had given him "pig-paranoia". At the social security office, wich he turned to as a jobless, homless artist to "get money for food and plastic", the officers formed their own private opinion of Kjartan. And when he turned up in his imaginative clothes and discussed his approach to art, one officer described him as "so eccentric in thought and appearance, that a layman naturally wonder if he is mentally sane". Kjartan personally was to become one of the sharpest criticts of this intolerant concept of Normality in swedish psychiatry.

<< previous   next >>

Persecution (1968-70)cont.

In the autum of 1968, the reports of the social welfare office were referred to a social psychiatrist, who diagnosed Kjartan as suffering from "mental illnes" and promptly offered him a bed in a mental hospital. When Kjartan turned this down, she prescribed him a jar of Hibernal pills - strong ataraxica - also known as Chloropromazine and Hibanil. He did not ingest the Hibernal (the name is associated withthe wor Hibernate), but used it as artistic material. One of his protecting police dogs was give pills for eyes and was transformed in to the drug dog "Hibernal-Basse".

In 1969 Kjarta had a break-through with the exhibition "Kjartan's psychiatric un-health - a borderline case", in which he assambled all his anti-psychiatric objects. The invitation cards were printed on social office welfare application forms. The bill for the exhibition was posted to the social welfare office. He's "case" filled a whole page in Dagens Nyheter, Swedens largest daily paper, and the threat of involuntary confinment was removed. Ha was an artist, albeit poor, but he was no longer a mental hygienic dilemma.

However, he's ordeals did not end here. He had succseded in getting a flat in a house that was to be pulled down at the end of the year, according to the bailiffs. Once again he would be out on the street. So he packed all his belongings, had them taken to the Museum of Modern Art and moved in as a squatter. He appealed for "asylum from the Swedish society, which persecutes non-conforming minorities ".

Nixon visions (1971-74)

Richard Millhouse NixonNixon was the person and the identity that he was to pull down totally in his art. He found an attractive poster of Nixon and equipped it with a han holding a coffee-cup, from a Swedish advertisement. It was a striking paradox in Sweden at the time, with Bad-guy No.1 promoting the country's most popular coffee brand. This picture was Kjartans starting point for new actions. In nightly raids he plastered Stockholm with the coffee-drinking president. The picture could be seen everywhere. As usual when Kjartan was in action, there was a great deal of fighting, but also, for the firts time in many years, good art critique.

However, he was not satesfied. He now started serching for Nixons real identity beneath the polished surface. This generated an intensive visual "study of Nixons mental health". He began to operate on the sleek PR face with scissors and glue and produced a series of Nixon Cut Ups. In 1971 Kjartan exhibited 12 posters and portraits in Norway. During a performance with Nixon and fish blood at Nordkap, the whole exhibition was stolen, right under the nose of photographing American tourists. The police did not want to deal with the matter, since they considered the stolen goods were of no value.
Kjartan decided to write to Nixon in person to ask what he thought the vanished pictur was worth. "Since your apperance is more divine than material - if you see what I meen - I myself would suggest a price of 85,000 for yor portrait. Does this seem resonable to you, Mr President? "

The Identity Artist (1974-75)

In march 1974, he told the last Nixon story, he had managed to get his passport issued by the County Administration. It contained a photo of Richard Nixon, with Kjartan's hair and beard. He had assumed Nixon's identity, been stigmatised. The following year he travelled with his passport to New York to complete the metamorphosis. The passport marks the ultimate fusion of life and art. Here he found a symbol for his long path as an art object. Seven years of performances and a whole life dedicated to art are synthesised in his signature under his passport photo: kjARTan.

For a long time kjARTan had been leeding a veritable dog's life. In order to survive as an artist, it was advisable to be a good dog and wag one's tail to the authorities. In his own highly original way, he now wanted to visualise this, and decided promptly to become a dog.

He ordered nylon wigs from a factory on Reperbahn in Hamburg, and for 3 months worked on getting a tight-fitting and realistic poodle costume. With this specially designed poodle, he submitted himself as a work of art to the jury of the Liljewalchs museum spring exhibition.

<< previous   next >>

Moderata Museet, Kotteriet & garbage art (1975-82)

At the end of the summer of 1975, Kjartan's activities took on a new character. He had rented an empty tobacconist's shop on Bellmansgatan in Stockholm and opend his own gallery. A year later, he renamed the gallery Moderata Museet - a pun on Moderna Museet, the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm - and changed its adress to Meinhofgatan 88a. As an "art terrorist" he fel vast sympathy for Ulrike Meinhof and dedicated a post-art stamp that could be pasted onto an envelope to her memory.

It smelled of christmas baking. Kjartan had the idea of making food for a nice Christmas table to decorate his gallery window. Once he got started, he could'nt stop.

His new identity was the Konstbagaren (Art Baker) who stood in his Konstitori (approx. Delicartessen), baking ginger bread policemen. And in this project both my male and female sides, and all my other characteristics, came to expression.

Video - Polaroid (1978-82)

Kjartan's acquaintance with video as an artistic medium dates back to the "STOP-ART". In a video taped performance at Liljevalchs museum i early 1978, with an American artist, Annie Hamburger, whom he plasticsed andgarlanded with pine cones. When the video was first introduced in the choc-a-bloc studio, where an electronic organ now accopanied its visual counterpart with technological beats, it was to alternate with his longstanding experimental filming, wich had been one of his innumerable means of expression since the day's of the gallery in 1967.

Polaroid photography played an important suporting role. He had used fas-developing polaroid on a small scale ever since the Transevision exhibition at Galleri Konst in 1976, but it was not incorporated in excavation project until 1979, when it took on it's most grandiose dimensions, with incessant snap-shots.
In 1 year, he took more than 8.000 of everything he saw and everything "the camera wanted to see". The artistic status of video and polaroid was shifted yet again at the video and polaroid installation at Norrköpings Konstmuseum, where he mounted the polaroids on transperent plastic sheets, forming large quilts, contorted sculptures or, simply, Slettemark clothes.

In 1980 Kjartan started a clinic for "Video treatment", and "continuos treatment of children's groups as Polaroid-Daddy". In his role as video therapist and layer-on of media, he became Dr Video, who recived patients at his video hospital.

Mail to Karin Grönlund

Humanistisk kulturpris 2007 close X

Juryens begrunnelse:
